Gavalohori village is located in the Vamos municipality of the Apokoronas region on the northwest coast of the island of Crete, just 25km from Chania center and the old Venetian town.

This small, traditional and pretty village features a must-see local Folklore Museum, a couple of taverns, bakery, grocery store and a handicrafts shop. The mountains are ideal to enjoy walks, bird watching and bicycle rides. In the immediate area one can visit several churches, Venetian arches and wells, Roman tombs and an olive oil factory.

The nearby traditional village of Vamos is pretty, with carefully restored houses, narrow streets and traditional eateries and shops.

Just 4 km from Almirida village and beach and 8km from the small coastal village of Kalyves village with its sandy beach Gavalohori makes for the ideal base from which to explore west Crete from; being based in a tranquil mountain village with just a short drive to sandy beaches with watersports and the convenience of the facilities one may need while on holiday.

The nearest airport is Chania airport (CHQ), located 30km from Gavalochori (about a 30 minute drive/taxi ride) while Heraklion airport (HER) is at 135 km (just under a 2 hour drive).

Driving Directions:

From Chania airport, follow signs to Chania center. As you exit the gates of the airport grounds, you turn left at the first intersection. Follow this straight road until you reach a traffic circle. At this traffic circle, you turn right (following signs for Chania).

At the next traffic circle you come to, turn left (going downhill) now following signs to Souda (port of Chania). Continue going downhill, passing a large bowling establishment (called "Bowling Mega Place") on your right hand side. When you come to a set of traffic lights you should see a sign for a left turn to Souda port and a right turn to the New National Road. Turn right in the direction of the New National Road. Pass a petrol station on your right hand side. Take the on-ramp onto the New National Road signed for "Rethymno", heading east (not heading west towards "Kissamos/Kasteli").

When on the New National Road, pass an exit marked for "Souda". Approximately 3km on you pass an exit for "Megala Chorafia and Aptera" on your right hand side and a further 2 km on you pass an exit marked "Kalami/Almyrida/Kalyves" on your left hand side. Stay on the New National Road and take the next exit (approximately 5km later) marked "Armeni/Kalyves/Neo Chorio/Vamos" on your right hand side. As you take the exit, turn left in the direction of Kalyves (passing under a bridge). Continue on this road until you reach a T-Junction. Here you turn right and immediately right again into the first street (uphill). At the stop sign turn right again (the road is bendy and uphill) and then continue straight following signs for 'Vamos'.

You will enter Tsivaras village and exit this village. Continue on this road passing an olive oil factory on your left hand side. Continue following signs for Vamos. You will pass a Silk Oil gasoline/petrol station on your right hand side and an Avin gasoline/petrol station on your left hand side. Continue on passing a big church on your left hand side. Continue uphill and when you see a pharmacy (approximately 50 meters after the big church) on your right hand side, turn left into the small street (follow signs now marked for the 'Health Centre of Vamos'). Another 50 meters on, turn left and then turn right (always following the signs for the 'Health Centre of Vamos'). You will soon pass a soccer field on your left hand side and the Health Centre of Vamos on your right hand side. Continue on this road slowly as you encounter S-bends. After these bends turn left and you will see that the tarred road ends and a dirt road begins. Go onto the dirt road and drive slowly for approximately 300 meters. Villa Armonia's entrance is directly ahead and Villa Prinolithos' is uphill on your left - welcome!
